Dear Mayor and City Council,

I am writing to unequivocally condemn the resolution proposed by the Mayor, which will be considered by the city council this evening. This resolution does one thing: it tells Jewish Californians that they are not welcome in your city.

While you and the Council claim to advocate for human rights and social justice, your resolution is one-sided and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. It's important to note that your resolution fails to address the role of Hamas, an organization officially designated as a terrorist entity by the United States. Furthermore, your resolution contains disinformation and misinformation, most of which is propagated by Hamas itself. Additionally, your resolution accuses Israel of collective punishment, an accusation that is not only inaccurate but also hypocritical. The resolution overlooks the fact that thousands of rocket attacks from Gaza indiscriminately target Israeli civilians, which is an obvious form of collective punishment.

If passed, the damage done by your resolution will extend beyond your city limits. It will sow division locally, throughout the State of California, and across the nation. Your resolution attempts to address a complex international issue that is thousands of miles away and not fully understood by the Council. While you are clearly not international law experts, it's your responsibility to ensure that official statements from the City contain factual and accurate information. You have failed in this regard.

In light of these concerns, we strongly urge the Council to take immediate corrective action. First, revisit the language and framing of your resolution to ensure it is accurate and factual. Second, consult a diverse range of community members, especially those with lived experience in the region, before passing resolutions on international issues. Finally, use your platform to foster meaningful dialogue and mutual understanding, rather than promoting fringe ideologies.

I insist that you take these concerns into serious consideration and revise the resolution to reflect a more factual perspective. Otherwise, you are sending a signal to Jewish people everywhere that the City of Cudahy is closed for our community.
